The road to Qatar continues as 210 teams have been competing around the world to qualify for their spot in Qatar for the 2022 FIFA World Cup. With only 31 places available (32 counting the automatic qualification of the host country Qatar), the final rounds of qualifying matches will certainly entertain.
All eyes are on the United States Men’s National Team (USMNT) as they begin the final rounds of their qualification journey. Having lost to Trinidad and Tobago in an upset match in 2017, resulting in not qualifying for the 2018 World Cup in Russia, the last world cup appearance for USA was in 2014 when Brazil hosted the tournament. The USMNT is determined and ready to prove themselves once again and fans are expecting an appearance in Qatar.
World Cup Qualification Format
A total of eight teams, known as The Octagonal, will compete in the final round of the qualification matches for the Concacaf Confederation: The top 3 teams from this region will automatically advance to Qatar with the fourth-place finisher sent to compete in play-off match with another region for an opportunity to advance. Each team will compete in 14 matches (seven home and seven away). Team USA and Team Mexico are the favorites in this region with Canada (haven’t qualified since 1986), Costa Rica, and Honduras close behind. While Jamaica is considered a wild card, Panama and El Salvador are not expected to advance. Anything is possible.
