Hosting the Olympics is in many ways an honor for any host city and their citizens. There is a sense of pride and excitement amongst the locals for many years leading up to the games. Showcasing their heritage, culture, and communities to the rest of the World on such a large stage, is a once in a lifetime opportunity, for most. In 2022, Beijing, however, will join the list of a handful of cities that have been lucky enough to host the Olympics multiple times. What sets Beijing apart is that it will make history as being the first city to host both a Summer (2008) and Winter (2022) Olympic Games.
Beijing will host the 2022 Winter Olympics in February of that year. Venues will be spread across the city of Beijing, as well as, two different mountain regions which are both accessible via a recently finished high speed train transferring spectators from the City to the farthest region in less than 50 minutes (a car ride takes 3-4 hours). Organizers have said they will repurpose and use 4 venues from the 2008 Summer Games in the upcoming Winter Games. Athletes will compete for 109 Gold Medals across 15 disciplines, giving spectators many opportunities to witness history being made.
While Beijing is the first city to host both the Summer and Winter Olympics, it isn’t the first city to host an Olympics more than once. Here is a list of other cities who have hosted an Olympics more than one time.
- Athens (1896 and 2004 Summer Olympics)
- Paris (Summer 1900, 1924, and 2024 Summer Olympics)
- London (1908, 1948, and 2012 Summer Olympics)
- St. Moritz (1928 and 1948 Winter Olympics)
- Lake Placid (1932 and 1980 Winter Olympics)
- Los Angeles (1932, 1884, and 2028 Summer Olympics)
